Stainless Steel Passivation

Our Passivation services provide a crucial solution for enhancing the corrosion resistance and longevity of your stainless steel components.

We offer stainless steel passivation via a chemical process that treats the surface to reduce it’s chemical reactivity, primarily in the case of stainless steel, by removing free iron from the surface using an acid solution to inhibit corrosion. Either, solutions of Nitric acid alone, or Dichromated Nitric acid solutions (Ones containing hexavalent chrome). A number of different ones are available to suit all alloys.

Our passivation process begins with a thorough cleaning to remove contaminants and surface impurities from the stainless steel. We then immerse the components in a passivating solution, typically consisting of nitric acid , with or without Sodium Dichromate. This solution facilitates the removal of any surface iron particles and promotes the formation of the protective oxide layer incorporating other alloy components (especially chromium and often nickel). Finally, the components are rinsed, dried, tested and inspected to ensure compliance with the required standard.

Benefits of Stainless Steel Passivation

Delivering passivation solutions of the highest quality, precision, and reliability

Ashton & Moore Passivation

Our experienced team utilises state-of-the-art equipment and adheres to industry best practices to ensure consistent results that meet or exceed customer expectations.

  • Corrosion Resistance: Passivation creates a durable and corrosion-resistant surface that prolongs the lifespan of stainless steel components, even in harsh environments.
  • Improved Aesthetics: By removing surface impurities and stains, passivation enhances the appearance of stainless steel, leaving behind a clean, uniform and bright surface.
  • Enhanced Performance: Components treated with passivation exhibit improved performance characteristics, including greater resistance to wear, fatigue, and chemical exposure and enhanced adhesion promotion for subsequent layers, as well as, aiding prevention of hydrogen embrittlement.

Brass Passivation

We also offer a number of different options for brass passivation, which is common in the Defence sector for certain munition components and again is utilised to prevent corrosion and promote either chemical resistance and/or adhesion of subsequent protective coatings and lacquers.
